CHICAGO — In an announcement that left Cubs fans choked up, Cody Bellinger, one of the team’s most iconic players, has officially taken a leave of absence from the lineup to be with his beloved wife, who is battling a serious health issue that has not been publicly disclosed.
“I promised her, from the first day we fell in love: no matter what happens, you will never face it alone,” Cody Bellinger said, his eyes red during an impromptu press conference this morning at Wrigley Field.
The Cubs confirmed that Cody Bellinger will be taking a leave of absence to care for his wife and “put his family first.” The entire team immediately expressed their full support.
Although Cody Bellinger’s family has not publicly disclosed the details of his diagnosis, a source close to the team said the situation is “serious and will require long-term care and treatment.”
“We don’t need pity, we need prayer”
“I didn’t leave the Cubs because I lost faith, I left because of love,” Cody Bellinger said. “I love baseball. But more than anything, I love my family.”
While there is no return date yet, Cody Bellinger insists he is not giving up baseball — he is just putting it on hold because “the most important game of my life is happening in my family.”
“I want to be her husband, her friend, her prayer partner. And if I ever get back on the field … that’s the day I know she won her battle.”
