A couple living in Staten Island, New York, just dug up a box in their backyard that contains lots of treasures and cash worth USD 52,000 (almost 1.2 billion VND).

According to the New York Post, husband and wife Matthew and Maria Emanuel said they were delighted after finding a rusty and decaying metal box buried in their garden.

then, they were shocked to learn that the property in this box was worth up to USD 52,000 (equivalent to almost VND 1.2 billion).

Inside the box were $100 bills and a bag full of diamonds, gold, and sapphires.

“I thought my wife and I had found a long-buried treasure. We were very scared. It’s something you can’t hide,” Matthew Emanuel told the Staten Island Advance.

However, inside the treasure chest was also a note with a Brooklyn address that made the Emanuels immediately think of one of their neighbors.

Husband Matthew Emanuel said: “We realized it was the address of one of the houses next door to ours, so I went to their house and asked if they had ever been robbed.”

Not surprisingly, the neighbors said that they had been robbed almost seven years ago.

the New York police have also confirmed that this neighbor’s safe was stolen in 2011, according to the CBS news agency.

the owners of this treasure chest declined to comment on the incident, but were delighted when their possessions were recovered, the Emanuels said.

“She trembled with joy and hugged me to thank me,” Matthew Emanuel said of the neighbor.

Wife Maria Emanuel added: “Some people asked us why we returned the treasure box, but it is not our property, so we have no right to keep it.”
